Living in Shanghai

May 19, 2008

Three minutes of silence between the horns. The China stops.

Only yesterday they were proclaimed three days of national mourning for the victims of Sichuan. Three days to think of the victims, those 2, 4, 10, 30 and those not yet dead, but also to those who have lost everything, or someone.

In one of my schools I arrived breathless at 14:18, by the way today's exam tests on crisis management and its hell with the fire alarm sounded. Do not exercise, only an effective way to call everyone together. One of the principals to tell the time, to bring figures, remind us of that school of 800 students where there are 650 deaths, with 28 of the 45 professors. And with the 6500 other school buildings. They start three minutes of silence at 14:28, hours of the earthquake. 30 seconds unreal. Friends around the city tell me that the majority of people have simply stopped. And then the one, two, dozens of air-raid alarm horn and in the background. Human silence, screaming horns. Interesting collision of ideas at a time to remember.

Earthquake in China

I was in my schools, I would not have noticed most. But I was in the office, 12th floor, and I had just said "wow, I feel dizzy, a little drink 'of water." But my colleague equadoreno, experienced as a child, does so with Olympian calm: "It's an earthquake," go down.

And we went down, but not before the computer and forget to take it back. Oh well though, in the vicinity, only our building has danced, and only by 10imo up.

What better occasion to write a blog message from a pleasant pub with wireless, where I and this fellow we're drinking a beer?
